When you speak about hair loss, a lot of people can definitely relate with the dreaded topic. Well, for most people, hair loss is sometimes inevitable because when one grows older, he or she will definitely experience thinning hair. Though predominant among men, hair loss also happens in some women.

About 40 percent of men will notice hair loss by age 35. When they reach 60 years old,  65 percent of men will suffer from thinning hair. By 80 years old, an estimated 80 percent of men will notice marked hair loss. In women, on the other hand, 50 percent suffer from hair loss.

Normally, 100 strands of hair per day are lost and that is based on the average scalp containing about 100,000 hair follicles. When the number exceeds 100, it is considered hair loss. With the increasing number of people suffering from hair loss, the number of people seeking professional help for hair loss treatment increased from 361,077 to 811,363 between 2004 and 2008.

Hair Loss And Its Causes

What are the major causes of hair loss? Hair loss is mainly caused by genetics. Some men suffer from a condition called male pattern baldness, which is passed down from one generation to another. Experts say that about 50 percent of men will eventually experience hair loss regardless if it’s due to aging or genetics.

This is because a certain chemical dubbed as dehydrotestosterone (DHT), a male hormone that builds up and collects around the hair follicles. In men with male pattern baldness, their hair follicles are sensitive to DHT, shortening the lifespan of each follicle affected.

Other causes of hair loss include the use of medicines, stress, aging, disease and hormones, among others.
